Endowment Giving

Overview

Endowment gifts help achieve both the immediate and long-range program objectives of the Theodore Roosevelt Council.

Become a James E. West Fellow

Your endowment contribution of $1,000 or more makes you eligible for recognition as a James E. West Fellow. We always recommend that these gifts be made in addition to, and not in place of, your annual support to the Theodore Roosevelt Council.

You can make these gifts on behalf of others-to honor an Eagle Scout, a retired Scouter, commemorate a special accomplishment or anniversary, or in memory of a loved one. Special James E. West pins and acknowledgements are awarded for gifts at a level of $5,000, $10,000, and $15,000.

Become a James E. West by downloading the application form and return it to the Council with your endowment contribution.

Endowment Funds

The Theodore Roosevelt Council also has separate Endowment Funds designated for several purposes, including general program support, Onteora Scout Reservation, Schiff Scout Reservation, and Camp Scholarships. These are professionally managed funds where the principal is restricted, with only earned income used annually for the support of program of your choice.

Onteora Scout Reservation Endowment Fund

Located along the Adirondack trail in the heart of the Catskills is the breathtaking Onteora Scout Reservation in Livingston Manor, New York. Nicknamed “Land in the Sky,” Onteora is home to our resident summer camp as well as year-round short-term camping. Generations of Scouters have fond memories of time spent here. Each year more than 1,500 Scouts attend and have the unique opportunity to participate in a robust program offering more than 85 merit badges in 17 program areas, and more than 30 evening/specialty activities. Recent enhancements to the property include a new Trading Post, a cutting-edge bike track, installation of a new staff site with 9 cabins, and a refurbished Training Center.

This fund supports all aspects of the annual camping operation, property management, renovations, and upgrades to Onteora Scout Reservation.

Schiff Scout Reservation Endowment Fund

Known to earlier generations of Scouters as Camp Wauwepex, meaning “Place of Good Water,” Schiff Scout Reservation is located in the Long Island Pine Barrens at Wading River, N.Y. Five-hundred wooded acres surrounding a 30-acre pond make Schiff an ideal site for camping activities including aquatics and field sports. Schiff hosts hundreds of events and unit camping trips annually including Cub Scout camp programs, Cub Parent Family Weekends, and family camping. A new year-round 7,100 sq. ft. dining hall was recently added and the camp continues to host thousands of Scouts and their families annually.

This fund supports all aspects of the annual camping operation, property management, renovations, and upgrades to Schiff Scout Reservation.

Scouting Programs Endowment Fund

The Theodore Roosevelt Council, Inc. seeks to train youth in responsible citizenship, character development, and self-reliance through participation in a wide range of outdoor activities, educational programs, and, at older age levels, career-oriented programs in partnership with community organizations.

This fund supports all aspects of delivering a quality and robust Scouting program in Nassau County, including staffing, program supplies, property maintenance, and costs associated with camping and activities.

Campership Endowment Fund

Camping and other outdoor activities are an essential part of the Scouting experience, with programs that deliver adventure, challenge, and fun. If you talk to Scouts they’ll tell you the real benefits come in a much subtler form-the close friendships, the increased confidence, and the chance to spend one week of the year making memories that will last a lifetime. Some Scouts in families who are in a financially difficult situation may not have the opportunity to attend summer camp.

This fund provides annual scholarships, made possible through an application and review process, to provide camp scholarships to Scouts in need.
