Wauwepex Society
Overview
The Wauwepex Society was established in 2005 to support and promote camping at John M. Schiff Scout Reservation, the Theodore Roosevelt Council’s beloved camp property located in the Long Island Pine Barrens.
The Council’s first Scout camp was opened in 1921 in Miller Place and named Camp Wauwepex, the Native American word for “place of good water.” Then just one year later, it was relocated to its current location in Wading River. In 1979, in recognition of a significant gift from the Schiff family, the Council renamed the camp John M. Schiff Scout Reservation and used for many years as a summer resident camp and year-round weekend camping destination.
Events & Activities
Today, the property serves thousands of Scouts annually for short-term camping, hundreds of unit camping trips, themed events, Cuborees, Cub Family Weekends, and more. Wauwepex Society members support these activities by:
- Providing philanthropic contributions to the John M. Schiff Scout Reservation for the purpose of program development and capital projects.
- Serving as a volunteer corps to assist with maintenance of the camp property and working Scouting events.
Membership
Through membership in the Wauwepex Society, you can meet current Scouts, Scouters and their families, reconnect with fellow camp alumni, as well as help enhance and maintain the property for future generations to enjoy. New members are always welcome.
